What Is Eucalyptus Tencel?
Eucalyptus tencel is a wood pulp based fabric from sustainably harvested eucalyptus trees in Europe. It is the best natural plant based fiber alternative to petroleum based polyesters and nylons, and I'll tell you why below!
What's Wrong With Polyester?
Polyester fell out of fashion after the 70s, but with the rise of athleisure and activewear in the past 10 years it’s seen a massive comeback. Our new polyester is silken, moisture wicking (doesn’t show sweat, but repels it away from the skin), and is seemingly the best choice for sweaty exercise. However, polyester (both virgin and from recycled plastic bottles) has a dark side. It’s literally made from crude oil, coal, and water. It’s 100% dependent on drilling fossil fuels for its creation, and it requires a massive amount of energy and chemicals. On top of that, once the polyester fiber is created it’s coated with another round of chemicals to make it anti-microbial, and wrinkle and stain free.
We know washing our polyester clothing is shedding microplastics into the ocean, and it’s getting into our food chain and atmosphere. It’s been revealed that the average human consumes a credit card worth of plastic every year, and this is mostly due to the washing of our polyester fabrics, where the shedding plastic pieces move from the washing machine into the ocean. Polyester, nylon, and recycled plastic yoga pants may never decompose once the user is through with the clothing. Plastic and polyester take hundreds, if not thousands, of years to break down, and when they do it’s more microplastics in our environment. Essentially, polyester effects climate change twice- in the production of it by burning fossil fuels which deplete the ozone layer, and in the disposal of it as it decomposes and releases more methane gases into the atmosphere. YUCK. No thanks.
Wearing plastic coated with chemicals near our breasts and reproductive organs while sweating is still a very new invention without many studies to show if it harms us or not. One interesting study shows rats lose their sex drive when wearing polyester pants for an extended period of time. It’s been proven that polyester actually makes body odor worse, as it can trap bacteria, causing yeast infections. Cancer is in the rise because of more carcinogens in our environment. Some of the chemicals in polyester are known carcinogens. Is it really worth it to take the gamble? Do we have any other choices?
No, it’s not worth the gamble on your health and the planet's health. And, yes! We have other choices! The best choice we’ve found so far is eucalyptus tencel. Eucalyptus is the only fiber we’ve experienced that is able to compare to the performance factor of polyester. There is for sure a reason polyester is the go-to choice of athletes, runners, and yogis- it works. It does what it says it will, it keeps you cool and dry during your workouts. Never mind the environmental impact and potential health dangers. Yet, we don’t think you should have to choose between performance and the planet. You can have it all with tencel eucalyptus!
How Does Eucalyptus Compare to Synthetics Like Polyester and Nylon?
Eucalyptus fabric is just as silky as polyester or nylon, it dries quickly, and it resists wrinkles. Tencel eucalyptus has tiny microfibers that move the moisture from your body and evaporate it through the fabric, keeping you dry and cool. It’s more durable and more stain resistant than cotton. Eucalyptus tencel is like a Frankenstein fabric- it’s made from nature, but performs like it’s not natural, like polyester. Except it doesn’t carry with it the burden on the environment and on our bodies. It truly is the holy grail of athletic fabrics, and we think it’s the future of activewear.
Don’t just take our word for it- try eucalyptus out for yourself! I’ve personally tested our eucalyptus leggings and bra tops on my very sweaty, very pregnant, 85 degree summer hikes and runs and I’ve been really happy with the comfort, coolness, and moisture wicking capabilities. I always choose them over synthetic performance wear now. We are so excited and confident about this beautiful plant-based fiber that we would like to offer you a 30 day money back guarantee! Please try our eucalyptus clothing for your workouts! If you aren’t happy with them in anyway you can send them back to us for a full refund.
Thank you so much for being a leader and making the small changes that are so crucial for our health and for the recovery of our Mother Earth's health. Revolutions begin once WE decide what we will and won't stand for anymore. No more plastic activewear!
