There's this children's book I read to my kids called 'Up In The Garden And Down In The Dirt' by Kate Messner. My son has always had a hard time letting go of the flowers each fall and winter, and this book beautifully explains that in the winter time there is a whole garden underground of roots and hibernating insects, just waiting to reawaken when the soil warms up and dries out. This earthy yet simple collection is a dedication to the roots that survive the freeze and the snow, waiting for their perfect timing to unearth and unfurl under the sun. May we also remember there's a time for us to also be a garden underground, of roots and hibernation, and we will awaken again to the blooms and the life that inevitably always returns to us. It's all a season.
