Innocence Overalls

When I first rebranded Purusha People two years ago now I was much more militant about my findings on the fashion industry. I’d post things in a very black and white way- polyester is plastic! Cheap clothes are made by slaves! Washing our clothes is destroying the oceans! Sweating in synthetics is disrupting our endocrine system and causing cancer! Plant based is the only way!

Well, I’ll be honest, I still stand for these things, but the world is so much more complex than this. Polyester is plastic, but it’s inexpensive and durable. Cheap clothes are made by slaves, yet it’s the local government’s fault for not protecting their people (it’s not YOUR fault). Micro-plastics are everywhere, and unfortunately, transitioning to 100% plant based clothes for the entire planet is just not happening. We wouldn’t even have the resources to do so. What would we do with all the old synthetic clothes anyway? Wearing plastic could very well be an endocrine disrupter and cancer causing, so those of us with the power and money to choose can decide no, we won’t wear it. But what about the rest of the world that can’t afford ethical fashion? It’s always the people at the bottom that get the unhealthiest shittiest ‘options’.

I no longer feel comfortable lecturing people to buy better. Just because I’m wearing an organic cotton dress doesn’t make me a better or even a good person. The more I learn about the fashion industry and the way the world works in general, the more I feel that a global consciousness shift is the only way to make this world better for all beings. Until the mega rich learn that escaping to Mars is not the answer, the solution is to use their wealth and power to HELP their fellow human out. Our current climate is like the villains in a marvel movie have gotten all the power here on earth. The wrong people are running things. So to be so misguided to put the fate of our planet and her people on you, on us, feels absolutely unfair and cruel. This hot hot summer that’s getting hotter every year, I blame the selfish, insecure, unenlightened, and uncreative people at the top that continue to drill, mine, steal, and destroy all that is precious in the name of capital. I pray that the aliens come and inject us all with compassion. You do no need to feel blamed for all this, and you don’t need to replace your entire wardrobe with sustainable fashion brands to be innocent. You are already innocent.
