The other day I was meditating with Sam Harris’ Waking Up app. It was a lovingkindness meditation. It began with me thinking of someone I love without complication. Easy one— my son Shep. I wished him well, to not suffer, and to be free. Next, it was time to meditate on someone I didn’t like, not someone I hate, but just someone that annoyed me. (Haha, I can guarantee we’ve all got some of those.) I was told to do the same thing— wish them well, to not suffer, and find freedom. In addition, I was asked to think of this person as a child, as trying to find happiness too, and perhaps suffering themselves. And wish them well. We went back and forth between the person of simple love and the person I didn’t like. The purpose being: to dig within and discover our compassion does not have to be conditional. Cultivating lovingkindness actually helps to cut through the anger and frustration without simply burying the negative emotions. It made me face my demons head on, and see that perhaps I am really not so different from other human beings. Even the ones that I don’t like.
I give to you a handful of poppies to honor the beautiful gold that’s within your heart. It is my wish for you to gather the golden light in your soul, and radiate it out through your heart chakra. We are always enveloped in this light, we just don’t always remember. Allow this warmth and healing solar energy to comfort you, protect you, and inspire you to see that same glowing heart within all beings.
